Ride to Monte Cassino

I'm taking on the Naples to Monte Cassino Cycle for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity!

I am taking part in the Naples to Monte Cassino Cycle in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity on 1st-5th October 2026.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is a trusted source of support for serving personnel, veterans and their families in their time of need. In 2024 our trained teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 50,000 people, including veterans, serving personnel (regulars and reserves) and their families.

SSAFA understands that behind every uniform is a person. And we are here for that person and their family, any time they need us and in any way they need us.

Thank you so much for your kind support!

Thank You!

A big thank you to all my friends and family that have donated. It’s great to see the donations coming in. This week I’ve not done much training to be honest. There’s a bug going round the girls’ school and I was conscious of probably over training a bit last week. So I’ve paired it back.

Going to the Steel PT class yesterday was great though. There’s been a long break for the summer and it’s really good to be back. I’ve spent the time thinking about why this event is important to me and what it means to me to take part. Surprisingly, this wasn’t as easy as you might think. I guess, having done something fairly similar not that long ago, it’s been even more important to me to get that message across. Plus I’m not quite convinced of the power of social media these days: I know I don’t spend that much time on it and when I do the content I see is high end, mostly video content that is currently beyond me. So I’m trying to get my thoughts and emotions down on paper to help spread the word. Watch this space. Now, it’s probably time to get in the saddle…

And the good news is…

Monday 14th Sep
Today I was asked what the total climb will be over the 3 days. I confessed I hadn’t worked it out and the screenshots of the elevation profile don’t show it. So I worked it out and got a total of 2,370m. Which sounds like quite a lot… 😬 I guess the good news is that there will be just as much downhill… 😀 🚵‍♂️

I might have overdone it…

Sunday 13th Sep
Today was all about time in the saddle and going to visit a friend who happens to live to the east of Sheffield, where it’s much flatter than the Peak District. Which is just as well because by the time I was three quarters of the way home I was spent, and cursing the fact that I live half way up a big hill! In terms of a gradual training progression I’ve probably gone too far but it was good to see my friend and have that added purpose for this ride.

Not feeling it today

Sunday 13th Sep
I’m about to head out for what I hope is a 100km route out to a friend’s house east of Sheffield. I’m not really up for it TBH - it’s been a busy week at work and I’ve done a lot of driving over the past two days. Luckily, the need to train and raise this money for SSAFA overrides all of that so it’s time to get on with it. We shall see how this goes…

Training has started!

Friday 4th Sep
Training started a couple of weeks ago when Stuart and I headed out to the Peak District for a great ride on a fresh morning.  Great to get some miles in and enjoy the beautiful scenery thinking about the challenge ahead.
